Many of our students at Penn State World Campus are strong leaders whose enthusiasm often motivates their peers to get involved in student organizations and activities. We are excited to spotlight some of these excellent student leaders.
Alysse Deterville is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering. She has been involved in a variety of student organizations and activities both at World Campus and previously at Penn State University Park. At University Park, she participated in the Caribbean Student Association, the National Society of Black Engineers, and the Sign Language Organization. At World Campus, she currently serves as vice president of the Software Development Organization and co-chair of the Students of Color Affinity Group.
Develop a Broad Range of Skills
Deterville says being involved in such a diverse variety of roles and activities has helped her build strengths in many important areas.
“These experiences have served as pivotal opportunities to expand my skill set, particularly in areas such as web development, networking, organization, event planning, leadership, and teamwork,” she said. “Each organization provided unique challenges and learning opportunities, equipping me with practical skills and valuable connections that I will carry forward into both my professional career and personal endeavors.”
Embrace Every Opportunity
You never know what experience or connection might end up playing a pivotal role in your life, Deterville says, so she recommends getting involved in as many different activities as possible.
“If I could go back and give myself one piece of advice at the start of my college career, it would be to take advantage of every opportunity that comes my way,” she said. “Every experience, big or small, holds the potential for growth and learning — often in ways you might not anticipate until you fully engage with it.”
