Get Involved: Join the OLEAD Club

As a Penn State World Campus student, are you looking for ways to get more involved with your learning community? Do you want to expand your professional development and networking opportunities while working with peers, alumni, and prospective students? Joining a club is a perfect way to achieve this, and so much more! There are many wonderful clubs and organizations available to Penn State World Campus students. Today, we are featuring the Organizational Leadership club, also known as the OLEAD club.

We spoke to Mandee Davis, president of the OLEAD club, to learn more about it:

The OLEAD club got its start in January 2017, and over the course of one semester, it has now grown to seventy-three members. The main goals of the club are to offer professional development and networking opportunities to students, while expanding the knowledge of the OLEAD major, to both current and prospective students. Much of the club’s emphasis comes from creating opportunities outside of the classroom to mirror those given to a resident student.

The professional development aspect of the club focuses on obtaining involvement from other students, alumni, industry professionals, and faculty. For example, the OLEAD club brought in staff from Career Services to talk about career opportunities for students graduating with Organizational Leadership majors. For future networking opportunities, the club plans to bring in guest speakers, such as alumni and industry professionals.

The student engagement side of the club is a source for interview/career advice, scholarship questions, relevant TED talks, course questions, and more. The group hopes to start a mentor/mentee program this academic year. The program would pair current OLEAD students with an alum who is working in a profession of interest to the student. This will serve as a resource for career and professional advice on how to successfully enter the field. In the future, the club plans to promote student engagement further through implementation of blog postings, student profiles, and more!

Penn State World Campus students can also discover the great variety of clubs and organizations they can join — and other ways to get involved in the Penn State community at a distance — by participating in the upcoming Student Activities and Resources Fair. This virtual event is a great way to find out more about these activities, and gain information about other services and resources, such as mental health and career services. This fair will take place on Tuesday, August 29 from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. (ET). Register for this event now.
