Penn State students and recent graduates looking to bolster their résumés, gain work experience, or form connections with alumni may want to explore opportunities with LionLink Projects.
What is LionLink Projects?
LionLink Projects is an initiative from Penn State Alumni Career Services. University alumni and alumni-connected organizations can post available projects, and Penn State students or recent graduates can apply to complete those projects. LionLink Projects was launched in spring 2022 and revamped at the start of 2023 based on feedback from students and alumni sponsors.
Postings typically involve projects that require 10 to 40 hours of work, performed during a span of two to eight weeks. All opportunities are virtual and can be completed from anywhere.
Projects can be paid or unpaid. The project listing will include details about payment offered (if any), along with a description of the tasks involved. Examples of possible projects include:
- designing a logo
- creating a social media campaign
- conducting research or compiling data
- editing a video
- writing blog posts or website content
Benefits of Completing a LionLink Project
Completing one or more LionLink Projects is a great way to strengthen your résumé or get work samples you can use in a portfolio. This experience can help you become more comfortable interacting with employers and project managers. It’s also an opportunity to make valuable connections with Penn State alumni.
Increase Your Chances of Being Selected for a LionLink Project
Most LionLink Projects postings receive multiple applicants. Here are some ways you can stand out and increase your odds of impressing a project sponsor:
- Ensure your LionLink profile highlights all of your relevant credentials and accomplishments, including any work experience and your current academic program or any programs you’ve completed.
- Reach out to a World Campus career counselor for feedback on your résumé and cover letter.
- Read the project listing carefully and be sure to submit all requested materials. Many project listings request a résumé and cover letter, while some may also ask for samples of previous work you’ve done.
- If you have limited work experience, consider mentioning academic projects you’ve completed or skills you’ve gained through your courses or volunteer activities.
